South Africans Attended Interfaith Event

South Africans attended Interfaith Event in Israel

Three South African delegates recently attended an interfaith event in Israel entitled “Harnessing the Power – the Role of Faith Leadership in Community Development Projects in Africa and Israel.”

The religious leaders with the Chief Rabbis of Israel, Rabbi Yona Metzger and Rabbi Shlomo Amar (the ‘Rishon LeTzion’)

The South African delegates were Bishop Abrahams (the Director of Missions Unit at the Methodist Church of Southern Africa), Dr. Gerber (the General Secretary of the Dutch Reformed Church) and Rabbi Zekry (the Chief Rabbi of Durban).

The event allowed the South African delegates (together with other delegates from around Africa) to meet a cross-section of Israeli society, with both Israeli and Palestinian leaders and especially leaders and representatives of the different religious communities and those working for interfaith understanding, reconciliation and co-operation.

This event was motivated both by the imperative need for reconciliation between faith communities as well as the importance of facilitating personal knowledge of current issues rather than depending upon sensationalist headlines for information.

The delegates visited the residence of the President of the State of Israel, H.E. Mr. Shimon Peres.
